Processed animal protein – a natural ingredient for livestock feed and pet food
Processed animal protein (PAP) is used as an ingredient for livestock feed, aquafeed and pet food. It is made from by-products of food production, particularly livestock rearing and slaughter which are reprocessed to make them safe and stable.
Production and use of PAP is regulated by EU law to protect human and animal health. All materials used to make PAP are classed as fit for human consumption at the point of slaughter and the finished product is fully traceable and quality assured.
PAP has a high nutritional value and a low carbon footprint, making it an excellent alternative to imported proteins such as soya.
